Skating dress, take 2, or: I should have competed last year

It turns out that fashion in the ice skating world is as rigorously programmed as fancy clothing or auto designs are in the real world.  Designers/makers use This Year's Patterns basically exclusively.   And wouldn't you know it - the dresses that I like fall into last year's category!  The immediate upshot of this is that the dress I ordered in blue isn't available in blue for grownups any more, but only black.  After hemming and hawing, I went ahead and responded to the email saying that yes, I wanted the dress in black.  I haven't heard from the person since, and they failed to give a complete phone number in their email.  (I haven't listened to the phone message they left at my home; hopefully there's a complete number there.)  Another website that claimed to have that dress admitted, when I called them, to having none in stock of any color.

But really, it seems rather unfair that things like this cannot be found in adult medium anymore because it's last year's friggin' pattern.  I am peeved.

(As an aside to the previous post: I can get into an adult small, but it's awfully tight.  I misremembered; it was the juvenile 12-14 that I couldn't fit into at all.)

EDIT: Dress ordered.  It is promised to be in my hot little hands on or before 9/30.

That's more than a little ridiculous; basic shapes should be available anytime, as long as you're not looking for something weird, asymmetrical, or anything like that. Oh fashion industry, how we love you. [/sarcasm]

The really silly thing is, I even have a skating dress pattern that's similar to that dress you just linked; the major difference is the dropped waistline, and the armholes would need slight tweaking (as the one I have was designed with sleeves) but it has the keyhole back and everything. I doubt I could get anything done in time for the immediate competition, but if you do this again maybe I should make you a dress. :P

I actually would prefer something with sleeves - you can get kind of chilly while waiting for your turn! Also a longer skirt.

I'd been wondering whether to go for 'homemade' next time. I've never worked with stretch fabrics and am kind of afraid of them, and in general I don't have the time to do sewing stuff. (Also, there's some lovely dresses you can get from - again I forget the maker - but they're all made to order and have a lead time of 4-6 weeks. Not enough time.)

I've worked with lycra and stretch velvet enough times that there's really no reason I shouldn't be able to do it for you, and then you could have whatever design you'd like. Also, I have a serger at my disposal, which makes stretchy seams a lot easier to sew and a lot stronger when worn. The main reason that I think I can't do it this time around is that 1) I still don't really feel comfortable working entirely off measurements if I want any hope of getting a good fit, so I'd rather find a way to see you in person for a fitting and 2) while the selection of dancewear fabrics around here isn't bad, it's also not the greatest and ordering online from a specialty shop adds a lot of time to the whole affair. If it wasn't for that, I'd just offer to make you one right now, but it'd be a real shame to have a dress that didn't fit. :/

That's okay! We only knew we were competing really recently, and I've now been promised the Black Dress on or by 9/30. (Competition is 10/10-10/11, so that gives me a bit of time to work with it.)

Really, much of what I love about the dress I pointed to in the post is the fabric. That gorgeous midnight blue with the (relatively) subtle and classy glitter plant pattern coming up from the waist... Ah.
